I holidayed on Lamma Island 2years ago andl I saw the disruption of roadworks and other repairs going on daily, by local workers. The rest of my stay consisted of peaceful walks along every coast plus crossing of the busy shipping channel to and from the mainland, experiences with other huge ships which I will not forget. I also saw many tourists on my walks, enjoying the 'remoteness' of the island. All of this would be different should the land at south Lamma be rezoned to Developmental land. Please place my objection to the re-zoning with the appropriate people. Thank you.

I would like to make the strongest possible objection to the proposed re-zoning of parts of south Lamma Island (reference Y/I-LI/1). Most of the area is currently zoned as "Conservation Area" or "Coastal Protection Area". These designations were put into effect to protect it from development. It would make a mockery of Hong Kong’s planning process if land-use designations that are intended to protect an area from development are overturned at the request of a developer. The scientific and environmental importance of south Lamma is internationally recognized. It is the habitat of a protected species of tree frog (Romer's tree frog), the nesting ground of endangered green turtles and home to several important archaeological sites. Most importantly, it is a wonderful resource for all Hong Kong people and one of the few areas of unspoiled natural beauty that is easily accessible from Hong Kong Island. The development plans for south Lamma (The Baroque on Lamma) bear a striking similarity to Sea Ranch on Lantau Island. Just like the proposed Lamma development, Sea Ranch promised luxury living, high-end leisure facilities and fast, frequent ferries. Yet it failed on all fronts. It has few residents, crumbling buildings and no facilities. Time Out’s website likens it to “Discovery Bay after a direct hit from a neutron bomb”. It would be a tragedy if south Lamma, which is lauded for its beauty, tranquillity and environmental diversity, became the second of Hong Kong’s coastal regions to be likened to a nuclear bombsite. South Lamma is one of Hong Kong’s last remaining wildernesses. It should be treasured and preserved for future generations. I appeal to the Enviromental Protection Department to reject the re-zoning application and take decisive action to guarantee its permanent protection.
